We are introducing a new way to help simplify the commercialization of your titles: Publishing Status. This change will not only simplify how and when you get your titles to market, but will also enhance each publication’s Formats section’s display.

With these changes, you will have a better understanding of the status of every format of a publication. The different commercialization steps (pre-availability, pre-order and sale) will be automatically determined based on dates entered in your Release plan. Thus, all this information is centralized in place.

Specifically, these changes are implemented in order to improve two aspects of a publication’s status:

  1. A better, clearer display of titles currently in pre-order.

  1. The capacity to distinguish your manual choices from the automated ones generated from your Release plan in regards to identifying the sales status of your titles.

Availability

Previously, a publication’s format availability was limited to two options (“Consultation” and “Sale”) and could be changed by a user.

Now... Availability can take one of three different values: “View,” “Sell,” and “Pre-order.” You will have a much clearer picture of the commercialization status of your publications.

These values cannot be modified by a user. They are automatically determined by Cantook Hub based on your Publishing status (see “Publishing status” article below) and dates entered in your Release plan.

Publishing status

This is a new option. Previously, in order to “force” a title to be removed from sale you had to directly modify its availability.

Now... Since Cantook Hub determines a title’s availability for sale (based on dates entered in your Release plan), the Publishing status allows you to control the sale availability of a publication’s format through two values: “Active” or “Inactive.” Therefore, you can choose whether to make a format available for sale or not. Take note that a title must be “Active” to be available for sale or for pre-order.

For publishers who use our various import and export tools or who are connected to Cantook Hub’s sales API, the following table lists some of the more technical changes. If you do not use these more advanced features available on the platform, you can ignore these changes.

Before

After

Proprietary XML

The <state> tag was imported and exported, and could be set to view or sell. It was mapped to format availability.

The <state> tag is exported and can be set to view, preorder or sell.

It is ignored on import.

The default publishing status is “Active.”

CSV version 7

The “PDF for sale” and “EPUB for sale” columns allowed to import and export format availability, and could be set to view or sell.

The “PDF for sale” and “EPUB for sale” columns allow to export format availability, and can be set to view, preorder or sell.

They are ignored on import.

The default publishing status is “Active.”

Dynamic XLSX

L’état d’édition était toujours actif.

Publishing status is imported and exported in the PublishingStatus column. This column is mandatory in order to create a new publication.

If you are using a local file template or if you have a tool which helps you generate files to be imported into Cantook Hub, you must update your template or tool to add this new column as well as the appropriate value (active or inactive).

ONIX 3.0 and 2.1

The <PublishingStatus> tag was ignored on import and showed the format availability on export.

The publishing status is imported and exported in the <PublishingStatus> tag. This tag is now mandatory on all ONIX imports.

A Short FAQ:

What will happen if I have publications whose availability does not correspond with the release plan?

The Cantook Hub team will be on the lookout for titles in such a situation and will deal with them on a case-by-case basis. We will contact you for non-trivial cases.

I use the sales API. What does all this mean to me?

Some changes will be made in the way pre-order status is communicated in the catalog synchronization feed. API users have received an announcement email informing them of the changes.

Theses changes (and a few others) are described in detail on http://help.cantook.net/support/solutions/articles/4000057206-technical-announcement-changes-to-onix-and-xml-feeds-and-to-sales-api-summer-2015.

We invite you to immediately share this link with all members of your I.T. or web integration team so you can take note of the possible consequences these changes may have on your interpretation of ONIX 3.0 and proprietary XML feeds.
